Recently, we were called to help a kangaroo in trouble at a building site in Queanbeyan. The kangaroo was stuck in a trench behind a retaining wall and had several injuries, making the rescue complex and dangerous.
Our volunteer members Ian, Fleur, Hayley and Brian attended the scene to assess the situation. A local vet was able to administer a sedative for a safe and stress-free removal.
After being freed, the kangaroo—affectionately called "Dusty" due to the dirt covering him—was taken to Possumwood Wildlife, a dedicated veterinary hospital and recovery centre specialising in the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured native animals. Dusty had a serious wound on his knee and some irritation in his eyes from the dirt. The team at Possumwood gave him fluids, treated his injuries, and cleaned him up.
Dusty is now in recovery and is being closely monitored to ensure he heals properly. He will receive additional fluids and ongoing care, with the hope that he will make a full recovery and, eventually, be released back into his native habitat.
This rescue was a great example of teamwork and quick action. We're incredibly thankful to the quick thinking members of the public who called us to attend to the situation and to our volunteer members for ensuring Dusty’s safety.
Rescues like this remind us of the challenges wildlife face in urban environments and why it’s so important to have dedicated people ready to help.
