Volunteering with Wildcare is fulfilling and rewarding

There is a range of volunteer roles available with Wildcare. Our team includes animal rescuers and carers, and a range of administration and operational support roles.

Wildcare volunteers will have access to training, support and supplies to help them complete their roles. To volunteer with Wildcare you need to be a current financial member.

Information about the different roles are below. If you have any questions or would like more information contact our team

Volunteer Roles
Rescuers and carers

Our rescuers attend to callouts to help injured, sick or orphaned native animals and take them to either one of our carers or to a vet for treatment. Once treated, carers take in these animals and raise and rehabilitate them in their own homes. Animals are then released back into their native habitat when they are ready. Because the needs of different animals varies so greatly, our carers support specific species of animals that suit individual circumstances and facilities available at their home.

Administration and
finance

These volunteers help ensure we are meeting our reporting obligations to external bodies and our members. This includes book keeping and financial reporting, organising governance meetings and taking minutes, and helping maintain licenses, registrations and other important documentation.

Helpline operators

Our 24/7 Helpline receives calls about a variety of wildlife-related matters from questions about our organisation or animals, to calls for help to rescue sick, injured or orphaned native animals. Helpline volunteers operate on an on-call roster and work closely with rescuers to ensure animals are rescued and taken to be treated quickly. Helpline operators need good organisational and communication skills.

Logistics and transportation

As Wildcare services such a large region, we have a continual need to transport animals from and between rescuers, carers and veterinary clinics or wildlife hospitals. Our logistics volunteers help ensure our rescuers and carers have access to the resources and supplies needed to treat, feed and house animals in our care.

Fundraising

Wildcare relies on the generous donations from the public in order to continue to help our local wildlife. The fundraising team organise activities to help supplement donations including attending weekend markets, hosting special events and organising raffles.

Sewing, woodwork and construction

If you are a keen woodworker or sewer, you can help by building timber nest boxes for possums, gliders and hollow-nesting bird species, or sewing pouches and bags for rescued joeys and wallabies.

Communications and marketing

Telling Wildcare's story and making sure the public know what we do is vital to our continued operation. We need people to understand what we do, why we do it and how they can help by donating or volunteering - that's where our communications and marketing volunteers come in. Volunteers in these roles have experience in a variety of backgrounds and experience including strategic communications, website design and management, content creation and graphic design.

Release sites

People who live on suitable properties may be interested in becoming a wildlife release site. These sites are used to release animals ready for release back into the wild. This is typically a short term commitment requiring occasional check ins while the animal becomes accustomed to the area during a soft release before they are released completely.

Euthanasia

Sometimes the animals we are called to rescue have severe injuries and would be unable to survive in the wild. In most cases these animals are euthanised on animal welfare grounds. We have a specialist team of volunteers who attend these cases to perform the euthanasia.
