Wombats are adaptable large marsupials that live in a range of environments in our region. This can include grasslands and woodlands. They construct extensive burrow systems in areas with suitable soil conditions, showcasing their ability to thrive in diverse habitats.


We receive many calls throughout the year to assist wombats. Reasons these amazing creatures may need our help include:


  • Encounters with vehicles

  • Injury or illness

  • Mange

  • Dog attacks

  • Attacks from other wombats

  • Loss of habitat due to human activities


There is one type of wombat in our region, the bare-nosed wombat.


What to do if you find a sick, injured or orphaned wombat:

If you find an animal that needs help call our 24/7 Helpline on (02) 6299 1966. Follow the below tips to help give the animal the best chance of survival while waiting for a rescuer.

  • Keep your distance - Assess the animal from a safe distance so the animal does not feel threatened or feel further distress. 

  • Check the pouch - Be sure to check the pouches of deceased female wombats for joeys.
