Native reptiles in our region showcase an array of fascinating species, each with its own unique adaptations and characteristics. From slithering snakes to sun-loving lizards and even elusive turtles, these reptiles have successfully adapted to the distinct environment of the region.

They can be found in a variety of habitats, including grassy plains, rocky hillsides, woodlands, forests, wetlands, and waterways. They have adapted to both natural and human-altered environments, and can also be encountered in rural and residential areas throughout the region.

Wildcare receieves many calls to help reptiles every year. The most common reasons a reptile will need our help are:

What to do if you find a sick, injured or orphaned reptile:

If you find an animal that needs help call our 24/7 Helpline on (02) 6299 1966. Follow the tips below to help give the animal the best chance of survival while waiting for a rescuer.

  • Maintain a safe distance - Assess the reptile from a safe distance to avoid causing further distress or provoking any defensive responses. It's important to respect their space.

  • Do not attempt to handle or move snakes - Keep a close eye on snakes and monitor their movements and behaviour. Safely create a physical barrier to confine it and prevent it from escaping.

  • Wet your hands when handling frogs - Frogs have delicate skin that can easily become damaged if handled with dry hands.
