The word "macropod" comes from the Greek language, where "macro" means "large" and "pous" means "foot". This term is used to describe the family of marsupials that includes kangaroos, wallabies, and wallaroos, which are known for their distinctive large hind feet.

These fascinating animals are known for their powerful hind legs, which enable them to hop at high speeds and cover long distances with ease. They have a variety of natural habitats from grassy plains to rocky hillsides and can also be found in rural and residential areas.

What to do if you find a sick, injured or orphaned macropod:

If you find an animal that needs help call our 24/7 Helpline on (02) 6299 1966. Follow the tips below to help give the animal the best chance of survival while waiting for a rescuer.

  • Keep your distance - Assess the animal from a safe distance so the animal does not feel threatened or feel further distress. If you approach the animal it may attack you or leave the area.

  • Check pouch - Where possible, check the pouches of deceased female macropods for joeys. This is especially important during 'Pinkie' Season from April to October when joeys are not big enough to survive a long time without the warmth of the mothers pouch.
